In September of 1906, 134 students enrolled in Knox County's (Tennessee) first, free public high school. It was built in the small town of Fountain City, which adjoined Knoxville on the northeast. From 1906 until 1951 Central High was known as "County" in its very intense rivalry with Knoxville High School ("City"), the only high school located inside the city of Knoxville. The City/County high school football game on Thanksgiving Day afternoon was a tradition until 1951 when Knoxville High was closed and several other city high schools were opened.
In 1916 the Annex was built, a building fondly remembered by the class of '54 as a classroom/lunchroom/shop building. In 1930-1931, the main classroom building/library was built. In 1954, a new wing was built, housing the cafeteria, home economics, art, and music departments. The Class of '54 was able to enjoy that wing for just a few short months. From the original 134 students, Central High grew to 1800 students in the 1960s as Fountain City, now part of the city of Knoxville, grew in population. (KCHS web page, )
While Miss Hassie K. Gresham had been the principal of CHS from 1918 to 1947, the principal from our years at Central was Mr. H. G. Loy. In 1971 Central High moved from its location on the "Hill" above the "Station" to its present location at the corner of Jacksboro Pike and Essary Road. The old CHS campus is now Gresham Middle School, named for Miss Gresham.
On June 1, 1954, 276 students graduated from Central High School. Most of us had been students at CHS for all four years of our high school days, but we had attended many elementary schools, including Fountain City Elementary, Smithwood Elementary, Chilhowee Elementary, and others.
During the 50 (can you believe it? 50? that's half a century!) years since we graduated, the class has held many reunions. During the last 10 years since the Internet has become such a big part of our lives, we felt it would be good to begin sharing information and pictures from our reunions with all the class members with Internet access.
The following links will take you to the web pages for our reunions:

Here are some Internet pages concerning CHS and our classmates. If you were a member of the class of 1954 and

We were able to locate most of our class members, but 22 of them remain "lost" to us. Click here to see that list. Help us locate them!
